Managing Expectations While Preparing to Adopt

When starting the adoption process, it can be easy to get caught up in the logistics and planning: paperwork, background checks, home visits, training requirements, and a variety of other responsibilities. However, it is essential to remember that adoption is to ensure that a child or children have the family that is best for them rather than finding the right child for a family.

The earlier adoptive parents can start the process of educating, reflecting, and empowering themselves in knowing best practices, the better it will be for not only the children they are welcoming but also the entire family. This process can and should start as soon as you decide to pursue adoption.

Here are some recommended steps for you and your family as you prepare or are waiting to adopt:

  • Take time to learn about the different types of adoption (domestic/infant, public, and international) before committing to an agency or program.
  • Learn about trauma and the impact it can have on children and families. When you think you know it all, take a deeper dive and learn some more!
  • Ensure that you’re always putting the child’s best interests over the desire to build your family. Don’t rush to find a match. Make sure you are the family that the child needs.
  • Expand your support system. Talk to others who have adopted or fostered and learn from their experiences. Join a support group. Sign up for our e-newsletters or browse our Resource Library.

At the Coalition for Children, Youth & Families, we know that making the decision to adopt is not easy and requires a lot of time, reflection, and education. We are here to support you through every step of the process.
