As caregivers, we need to prioritize our own mental wellness and well-being. Non-negotiable, mic drop, full stop.
Mental wellness is the difference between feeling like homework battles and the kitchen cabinet doors left open (again!) are going to push you over the edge, versus waking up knowing you’re in control of making your day great.
Unlike mental health, which pertains mostly to our brain’s health, mental wellness is about creating (and sustaining) a positive state of mind that enhances coping and resilience. It’s about proactive, actionable steps we can take that empower us, rather than leave us feeling defeated.
Below are some simple but impactful steps that everyone has time for.
Six Simple Tips for Mental Wellbeing
- Listen to your favorite music
- Start each day by saying aloud, “I’m going to make today a great day!”
- Take time to do something you love–like crafting, dancing, baking banana bread, reading/listening to a book, learning something new, or talking to a friend
- Get outside–even 10 minutes makes a big difference
- Look for opportunities to do something nice for someone -like holding a door, offering a sincere compliment, sending a card for no reason, or sharing your banana bread
- Smile; it’s a natural mood booster that has lots of benefits
